Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver is offering students the opportunity to participate in Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denvers first annual Youth Leadership Program.
The program will begin with a weeklong leadership and service seminar this summer from June 22nd to June 29th. During this week student participants will meet with local leaders, help with Habitats ongoing projects, build friendships with other service-minded students, and gain an in-depth understanding of low-income housing issues and poverty in Denver.
Following this intensive experience, interested students will be encouraged to continue their involvement with Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver (HFHMD) by taking up leadership roles within HFHMDs youth program, Youth United. The goal of Youth United is to empower youth to make a difference in the Denver community by raising all the necessary funds and recruiting all the volunteers needed to complete one entire house. Students who choose to stay involved will be working on projects that may include: planning a large fundraising event such as HFHMDs family hike, starting a community garden program with Habitat homeowners, and creating awareness and legislative advocacy campaigns to use in high schools during the school year.
Were seeking incoming sophomores, juniors and seniors with a passion for public service. This program will undoubtedly be a valuable experience for students (and not only because it looks good on college applications!). At the very least they will return to school in the fall better prepared to lead their peers in service to the community, but after a full summer of service and leadership, they will likely be doing far more than that! As program coordinator, my goal is to help students become self-aware public servants, advocates for social justice, and capable contributors, not only to Habitats youth programs, but to their communities as a whole.
An application for the program is in the Counseling Office or in room 223. Please contact youth.united.leadership@gmail.com or call (720) 838-8787 for more information. Applications are due by May 29th. There is a $50 fee per participant to cover program costs. Scholarships are available.
