FW: Recruiting: Youth and Adults for Mayor's Youth Commission

Sent on behalf of the Mayor’s Office for Education and Children

Youth Commission Vision Empowered young voices working with city officials to build a better Denver.

The Commission is the advisory entity to the Mayor on issues affecting youth in Denver. It is a 21 member youth/adult partnership with 11 youth members, ages 14-18, 5 representatives of City Agencies and 5 representatives of private/non-profit agencies which serve youth. Commissioners are appointed for three year terms. They meet bi-monthly on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., and other time commitments as necessary.

This year the Mayor’s Youth Commission partnered with Greenprint Denver to work on reducing the carbon footprint. Toward that end, the youth commission developed and presented a workshop entitled: Big Foot….Small Brain. We presented the workshop for sixty students at the annual Youth Summit, April 3rd. We also sold reusable bags with educational materials to teach about the carbon footprint. Go to our website to view the power point presentation, www.denvergov.org/education, click on Commission on Youth.

The Youth Commission is an exciting place for younger citizens of Denver to be involved in their community and the City of Denver. It is a service learning and leadership opportunity. The Commission will have youth and adult vacancies to be filled by August 2009 and we are seeking applications through June 19th. Applicants will be interviewed this summer and recommended to the Mayor’s Office for appointment.

Commissioners, appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council, serve three year terms so we are ideally looking for 10th graders going into school this fall. The youth need to live in the City and County of Denver and be between the ages of 14-18. We are looking for committed young people willing to work with students from other schools and adults on issues important to youth. Adults need to meet the criteria mentioned above work for a city agency or non-profit that works with young people.
